How to Choose an Air Purifier

An air purifier is one fan, one filter stack, and one number that decides whether it works in your room: CADR. Almost everything else on the box is either a restatement of that number or a distraction from it. The most common mistake is buying by the coverage headline - the 3,235-square-foot claim on a machine AHAM rates at 635 square feet - and the second most common is buying enough airflow at a noise floor nobody tolerates at 11 p.m. This guide covers sizing by CADR and room area, what the AHAM Verifide seal actually certifies, how to decode the 1-ACH marketing figure, what each filtration stage does, how to read published decibel and wattage numbers, and which smart features change what a machine does rather than how you poke at it. Every score quoted here comes from our engine reading published specs, not from lab testing.

Start With the Room, Not the Box

Measure the floor area you actually want cleaned, in square feet, and size from there. The convention behind every coverage rating you will see is simple: a purifier's smoke CADR should be roughly two-thirds of the room's square footage at a standard eight-foot ceiling. Run it backwards and coverage equals CADR multiplied by about 1.55, which is exactly how the figures in this catalog are built. The Levoit Core 300's 141 CADR becomes 219 square feet. Treat those as the optimistic edge of the same rule rather than a different rule, and keep a little headroom.

What AHAM Verifide Actually Certifies

AHAM Verifide is a voluntary certification run by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. A model is measured to one common protocol, its CADR figures are third-party verified, and the seal carries a suggested room size derived from those figures. That is the whole value: it is the only performance number in this category that compares honestly across brands, because every model carrying it was measured the same way. Most of this catalog traces back to it. The AHAM coverage figure describes the room this machine can hold at roughly five air changes per hour, which is one complete turnover every twelve minutes or so. The marketing figure describes the largest room the same fan could move once through the filter in sixty minutes - one air change per hour. One turnover an hour is not meaningful cleaning when pollen, cooking particulate, smoke, and dander are entering continuously; the air is being diluted slowly rather than cleaned. So the working rule is blunt: take any square-footage headline, divide by four to five, and shop from the result. The 211i Max is not a 3,235-square-foot purifier that happens to also be rated 635. It is a 635-square-foot purifier, and that is still the largest genuine coverage in this catalog.

Air Changes, Ceiling Height, and Open Floor Plans

How many air changes per hour you need depends on why you bought the thing. The Three Scores Behind Every Ranking

Each model carries three sub-scores and one overall. The first is clean-air delivery, driven by CADR and rated coverage. Stage counts are marketing; what the stages do is not. An air purifier filters particles out of air that is already in the room. It does not fix a mold problem, which is a moisture problem; it does not vent combustion byproducts; it does not replace a range hood or an open window; and it does nothing about carbon monoxide or radon, which need detectors and testing instead. CADR is a particle measurement, so no figure in this catalog describes gas removal - that is carbon's job, and carbon saturates. Fix the source first, change the HVAC filter, then buy a purifier for what remains. After that come the specific traps. Do not pay for filter grade you cannot use: the Medify MA-40's H14-grade media and UV arrive at 224 CADR, 31 dB, 60 W, manual controls, and $290, scoring 5.0, while the $170 Coway moves more air more quietly and adds auto mode.
