How to Choose a Robot Vacuum: What Actually Matters

Robot vacuum listings are a wall of numbers, and most of them are noise. Habilytics scores every model on three axes that actually predict how it performs: cleaning power, navigation, and dock autonomy. This guide walks through what each one means, where the marketing exaggerates (looking at you, suction Pascals), what you genuinely get at each price tier, and the cases where the honest answer is to skip a robot altogether.

Cleaning power and the Pascal reality

Suction is measured in Pascals (Pa), and the range is enormous — from 2,700 Pa on the Roborock Q5+ to 36,000 Pa on the Saros 20. That 13x spread is not a 13x cleaning gap. Our cleaning scores move from 4/10 to 10/10 across it, because suction hits steep diminishing returns and brush design, edge coverage, and mopping matter just as much. Dock autonomy: how often you actually touch it

The dock decides how much the robot bothers you. No dock means you empty the onboard bin nearly every run (Roomba Combo i5, autonomy 3/10) — fine for a small apartment, tedious otherwise. A self-empty dock (Roborock Q5 Max+, autonomy 6/10) drops debris into a bag you swap every month or two; this is the practical minimum for 'set and forget.' The mid-tier sweet spot is the eufy X10 Pro Omni at $650 (overall 7.7/10) — an omni dock and AI navigation for roughly 40% of flagship money, trading mostly raw cleaning power. When to skip the robot entirely

A robot vacuum supplements a real vacuum; it does not replace one. Even the Saros 20 at cleaning 10/10 is best-in-class for a robot, not a match for a good upright on deep pile. Skip the category if your floors are mostly high-pile rugs or tassels, if cords and clutter blanket the floor, or if a sub-$250 model is your ceiling — at autonomy 3/10 and navigation 4/10, it may create more babysitting than it saves. And if you want a robot mop to replace mopping, temper that: spinning and roller mops handle maintenance films, not scrubbing dried-on messes.

Does a higher Pascal number mean better cleaning?

Not proportionally. Suction follows steep diminishing returns, so a 36,000 Pa robot doesn't clean seven times better than a 5,000 Pa one — our cleaning scores only span 4/10 to 10/10 across that entire range. Above roughly 8,000 Pa, brush design, edge coverage, and mopping influence real-world results more than raw suction. High Pascals matter most for carpet and embedded pet hair, and far less on hard floors.

Do I need LiDAR, or is a camera enough?

LiDAR is the meaningful baseline for good navigation — it builds accurate maps and works in the dark, which gyro-only 'neat rows' robots (navigation 4/10) can't. An AI camera adds obstacle recognition on top, so the robot avoids cords, socks, and pet waste instead of pushing them around.
