Honeywell HPA300 vs Winix 9800: what does the extra $50 actually buy?
On the spec most buyers shop first - clean-air delivery - these two are a tie. Both are rated CADR 300 for smoke, both score 7/10 for clean-air power, and both are aimed at the same job: one large open room. Yet the engine scores the Winix 9800 at 7.7 and the Honeywell HPA300 at 5.3, a 2.4-point gap. All of that gap comes from the two things buyers underweight in the store and notice every day at home: how loud the machine is, and whether it manages itself. The Honeywell is $50 cheaper and has the better-documented CADR paperwork of the two. That is a real argument, and it is not enough to close a 2.4-point gap.

Clean-air power: a real tie at CADR 300
Both machines carry a 7/10 clean-air score, and they get there honestly: both sit in the CADR 300 class for smoke. The Honeywell's figure is actually the better-documented of the two - AHAM lists it at 300/320/300 for smoke, dust and pollen, with a rated room size of 465 sq ft. The Winix quotes 500 sq ft AHAM on its listing and a CADR in the same ~300 class per Winix's own spec. So the Winix covers 35 more square feet on paper, which is a rounding difference in a real room, not a reason to choose. One number to distrust on the Honeywell box: the '2,250 sq ft in 1 hour' headline. That is the 1-ACH figure - the floor area the unit can turn over once per hour, which is far too slow to control smoke, dust or pollen. The 465 sq ft AHAM rating is the one that assumes a useful air-change rate, and it is the number to size a room against. Winix's 500 sq ft is quoted on the same basis, which is why the two are directly comparable here. On throughput alone, these are two similar machines for the same class of room - and the cheaper one would win.
Noise and draw: 26 dB against 32 dB, 90 W against 130 W
This is where the tie breaks. The Winix scores 7/10 for noise against the Honeywell's 5/10, and the published floors explain it: 26 dB versus 32 dB on the lowest setting. Six decibels reads like a trivial gap. It is not - the decibel scale is logarithmic, so the difference between a 26 dB floor and a 32 dB floor is plainly audible in a quiet room at night rather than something you have to listen for. A 5/10 is a blunt statement: the HPA300 is the louder of the two, and 32 dB is its quietest setting, not the level it runs at while actually working a 465 sq ft room. Power draw follows the same shape. The Honeywell is rated at 130 W against the Winix's 90 W for the same CADR class. A purifier is an appliance you leave running, often continuously through allergy or wildfire season, so 40 W compounds in a way it never would on something you use for ten minutes. Same clean-air rating, more electricity, more noise. For a unit that will sit in a room people occupy, that is the real cost of the Honeywell's simpler design.
Controls: 9/10 against 4/10, and why it decides the verdict
The biggest single gap is here. The Winix scores 9/10 for smarts - app, particulate sensor, auto mode and the PlasmaWave stage on top of 4-stage True HEPA. The Honeywell scores 4/10, and its feature list is the whole explanation: a timer and a turbo button, manual controls, no app, no auto mode. Auto mode is not a gadget. A purifier only cleans at the speed it is set to, and a manual unit runs at whatever speed someone last chose - which in most homes means it sits on low for weeks, or gets shut off because it was left roaring on turbo. A sensor-driven machine raises its own fan when cooking or dust spikes the room, then drops back when the air clears. That is the difference between a purifier with a rating and a purifier that delivers it. Two honest caveats on the other side. Wi-Fi is a dependency - an account, firmware, a cloud service that can change or go away - while the Honeywell has nothing to pair and nothing to break. Price: $250 against $300, and when the Honeywell is the right buy
Reference pricing puts the Honeywell at $250 and the Winix at $300, but the street ranges overlap enough to change the answer. The HPA300 moves between $220 and $300; the 9800 moves between $250 and $350. At the extremes those are two different comparisons. Catch the Winix at $250 and it costs what the Honeywell usually does while scoring 7.7 against 5.3 - at that price the Honeywell has no argument left. Pay $350 for the Winix against $220 for the Honeywell and the gap is $130 for a quieter, lower-draw, self-managing version of the same CADR 300. Buy the Honeywell anyway if the space is a basement, garage, workshop or open living area where nobody is trying to sleep, where it runs on high during the day and gets switched off at night, and where connectivity is a liability rather than a feature. Near the bottom of its range it is a lot of certified CADR for $220, backed by the more complete AHAM paperwork of the two. Buy it for throughput, and go in knowing you are buying a loud, manual appliance and that you are the auto mode.
Verdict
Buy the Winix 9800. It matches the Honeywell on CADR 300, covers 500 sq ft against 465, and then wins everything else: 26 dB against 32 dB, 90 W against 130 W, sensor-driven auto against a manual dial. The 7.7 to 5.3 gap is not about cleaning power - both score 7/10 there - it is about living with the machine. Buy the Honeywell HPA300 if the room is large, empty at night, and the price is near $220. It is the same throughput for less money, as long as you accept a louder box you have to operate yourself.
