Both are 10,000 BTU SACC - the box numbers are the marketing
Cooling is a tie, and the engine says so: 8 out of 10 for each. Both units are rated at 10,000 BTU SACC and roughly 450 sq ft of coverage. SACC is the DOE figure that accounts for heat leaking back in through the hose and window kit, and it is the only number worth sizing a room with. The carton tells a different story. Midea sells this unit as 12,000 BTU under the old ASHRAE rating; LG sells the LP1022FVSM as 14,000. Same honest output, a 2,000 BTU marketing gap on one and 4,000 on the other. Nobody should read the LG's bigger box number as more cooling. What it does mean is that the LG has more distance to travel between the label and reality, which is what single-hose architecture tends to cost. Practically: our sizing math puts a 450 sq ft room with average sun exposure at about 10,000 BTU SACC, so both of these land exactly on the line rather than above it. In a top-floor room with wide south-facing glass, neither has headroom. That is a case for stepping up in SACC, not for picking the one with the louder label.
One hose or two: where the 9.3 comes from
The Midea Duo runs a hose-in-hose dual setup; the LG is single hose. That single architectural difference is most of the score gap, and it shows up as 10 against 9 on efficiency. A single-hose portable takes air from the room, runs it over the condenser and blows it outdoors. The room ends up at slightly negative pressure, so warm outside air gets pulled back in through every gap around doors, windows and outlets. The unit spends part of its output undoing its own work. A dual-hose design feeds the condenser from outside instead, so the room air it cooled stays in the room. The gap is not constant. In a shaded mid-size room it is small. In a large or sun-baked space, where the machine runs near capacity for hours, it is bigger than a 2,000 BTU spec difference would be - which is why our wizard gives dual-hose units a bonus in exactly those rooms. Single-hose owners can claw some of it back by sealing the window kit properly and keeping interior doors closed. 42 dB against 44 dB, and how much that is worth
Quiet is the other place the Midea takes a 10 to the LG's 9, on a difference of 2 dB. Be realistic about what that means. Two decibels is at the edge of what most people notice in a bedroom, and it is nothing like the gap between either of these and the fixed-speed portables they replace, which sit well above 50 dB and cycle on and off all night. The on-off transitions are what wake light sleepers; an inverter holding a steady low hum is easier to sleep through than a louder average would suggest. Both of these are inverters, so both clear that bar. One caveat on the LG's number, stated plainly: 42 dB is published on the Midea listing, while 44 dB is the figure for LG's dual-inverter class rather than a model-specific published rating for the LP1022FVSM. The engine scored it on the class figure, which is the honest thing to do with the data available, but it is a softer number than the Midea's. Nobody should choose between these two on noise alone. If the unit lives in a bedroom, the fact that both are inverters matters far more than the 2 dB between them.
When the LG is the right call, and when to skip both
The LG wins on three things the score does not capture. First, ThinQ: both units take app control, but if the house already runs LG appliances, the LP1022FVSM joins an app that is already installed rather than adding another one. Second, installation. A single hose is a simpler window kit, less blocked glass and less to reroute if the unit moves between rooms. Third, price behavior. List prices are close - about $450 for the LG against $430 for the Midea - but the street ranges overlap heavily, roughly $400 to $550 for the LG and $380 to $500 for the Midea. A 0.6-point engine gap is not worth $100. If the LG is sitting at $400 while the Midea is at $500, buy the LG. Skip both if any of these apply. Neither has a heat mode, so a year-round single-box solution is off the table here. If the room is under about 250 sq ft, 10,000 BTU SACC is more machine than needed and a sub-$300 single-hose unit will do the job for less. If the room runs well past 450 sq ft or bakes in afternoon sun, both are undersized and will run flat out. Both are also heavy, at 68 and 74 lb - portable means casters, not stairs.

The Midea Duo 12,000 BTU Inverter wins at 9.3 to 8.7, and it is also the cheaper of the two at list price. Same 10,000 BTU SACC, same 450 sq ft, but the dual-hose architecture and 42 dB earn perfect 10s on efficiency and quiet where the LG takes 9s. Buy the LG LP1022FVSM if you run LG ThinQ, want the simpler single-hose install, or find it $50-plus below the Midea. Buy neither if you need heat, or if the room runs much past 450 sq ft.
